Technology and Management International Business Case Competition:
Impacting Students in 2009 and Beyond
Introduction:
International experience provides invaluable learning and life-skill opportunities for students in preparing them for an increasingly global economy. The Hoeft Technology & Management Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has partnered with the Dual Degree Program in Technology Management at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to provide undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to apply their classroom learning to real-world problems in an international business case competition.
Increasingly when graduates enter the workforce they are expected to be able to participate on global teams and to quickly form effective working relationships. The ability to operate successfully in this challenging global environment is critical to their early careers. The Technology and Management International Business Case Competition was developed to provide students with the opportunity to build real, market relevant skills and provide a meaningful professional experience.
Students from various disciplines, backgrounds, and cultures immerse themselves in the challenge to devise innovative, realistic, and viable technology and business solutions to some of our world’s most pressing problems. Teams then compete to sell their ideas to a panel of judges who select the winning case.
The competition was successfully piloted in 2008 where students worked together to help address the environmental challenges faced by C40 Cities like Hong Kong and Chicago. Students traveled to compete in both Hong Kong and Chicago. In each city students collaborated on small teams to develop solutions which were evaluated by a panel of external judges. This pilot succeeded in providing the participants a real world experience and allowing student teams to engage with their communities, corporate partners, and alumni.
The International Business Case Competition Going Forward:
The Hoeft Technology & Management Program at UICU along with the Dual Degree Program in Technology Management at HKUST is now seeking additional partnerships with first-class universities across the globe to create and sustain an annual Technology and Management International Business Case Competition.

The proposal for future competitions would model the pilot and involve students from different universities, with varying educational and cultural backgrounds. Students will be given real-world problems impacting global sustainability and social development. Students will form multidisciplinary, cross cultural teams and work initially from their home campuses before traveling to participate at a host location.
The competition will be extended so that students initially work together remotely over a period of two months, conducting research, and preparing for a week-long exchange program. Through this approach, students will be given more time to build their skills and to experience the business and social culture of the selected city. It will also allow for a more intense case competition, as students will have more time to be involved in preparing their respective solutions.
In January 2009, we are seeking to partner with Seoul National University’s (SNU). Seoul, is the site for the May 2009 Clinton Climate Change Initiative Global Conference. In keeping with the theme of sustainability, we hope to identify a key challenge facing the city of Seoul and build a case competition around that theme.
Each participating university should provide students, staff, and the requisite resources to support the competition. Through this collaboration each partner should successfully engage its students, faculty, campus, corporate partners, communities, and alumni.
