Duration of Scholarship

For those enrolled in a master"s program, the JSSF scholarship covers two academic years, and for those pursuing a Ph.D., the scholarship is for three academic years. Each of these periods is the shortest curriculum required to obtain a master"s or a doctor"s degree.
The Exchange Student Screening Committee may determine that the scholarship includes a period (up to one year) for undertaking intensive Japanese language training or studying as a research student at a graduate school, if the recipient needs such training or study prior to the commencement of his/her postgraduate study due to the lack of Japanese ability. NOTE 1. Generally, the Japanese academic year begins in April and ends in March. The time of entrance examinations for graduate schools usually take place between September and February of the academic year prior to entrance, although the dates will vary according to each school.
In addition, the scholarship recipient who either studies as a research student at a graduate school or undertakes intensive Japanese language training must apply and take the entrance examination for graduate school during the period he/she is engaging in such training or study. In the event that he/she is unable to pass the graduate school entrance examination, scholarship payments beyond the initial year will not be continued.
NOTE 2. JSSF selects about five scholarship recipients as potential scholarship candidates from a selected number of universities. It should be understood that JSSF is not in a position to guarantee its sponsorship to all candidates.
